About the Town of Mount Vernon Demographics, 2000 Census: From 1990 to 2000, population in Mont Vernon grew by 12.3 percent to 2,034, adding 222 residents. The median age is 38.5, with 29.7 percent of the population under the age of 18 and 9.1 percent age 65 and older. The total number of households is 693, with an average size of 2.9 persons. Of those, 576 are family households, with an average size of 3.17 persons. As of April 1, 2000, there were 720 total housing units.Population Density, 2000: 120.9 persons per square mile of land area. Mont Vernon contains 16.8 square miles of land area and 0.1 square miles of inland water area. Origin: Named in honor of George Washington's Virginia estate, which got its name from Admiral Edward Vernon. George Washington's brother, Lawrence, the original owner of the estate, served under Admiral Vernon as an officer. Although probably not the reason for selecting this name, Admiral Vernon was also a close friend of Governor Wentworth
