No longer considered a bedroom community to Nashua, Hudson, on the east bank of the Merrimack River has developed into a thriving industrial and commercial center in its own right. Its enviable proximity to critical highways is scheduled to become even more advantageous as direct access to Route 3 is achieved with a newly built roadway and exit ramp. Hudson folks are friendly and forthcoming. They volunteer to contribute to the vitality of the community in many areas, especially contributing to programs benefiting the town's children. The English made the earliest permanent settlement in New England in Plymouth, Mass in 1620. Later, a few families settled in Gloucester and Salem. Between 1632 and 1645 a number of families made farms near the mouth of the Merrimack river in Newbury and Salisbury. The families of these people moved north along the river to Haverhill. These families were granted, or purchased land in Dunstable. The town of Dunstable, Ma was incorporated in 1673. It included the town of Hudson and many other Southern New Hampshire towns. The first settlement in Hudson was around 1672. The first recorded grant of land was made in 1661 to Joesph Hills. Three of his grandchildren were perhaps the first settlers in Hudson. The settlers petitioned to have a separate town due to the hardship of attending worship services in Dunstable, the hardship being that there was no bridge in place to cross the Merrimack River. Alvirne High School serves both Hudson and Litchfield and is highly regarded academically. In addition to high school curriculum, the high school boasts a regional vocational center and important agricultural and horticultural programs that provide a unique opportunity to continue the area's farming heritage. A town of just over 20,000 residents and 30 square miles, Hudson offers quiet open spaces and an abundance of recreational opportunities. Two golf courses, the Robinson Pond recreation area and a number of town facilities are available for members of the community. Hudson offers a wide variety of housing in both suburban and rural environments.
