More about Hollis Demographics, 2000 Census: From 1990 to 2000, the population in Hollis increased by 23.0 percent to 7,015, adding 1,310 residents. The median age is 39.6, with 29.6 percent of the population under the age of 18 and 8.3 percent age 65 and older. The total number of households is 2,440, with an average size of 2.88 persons. Of those, 2,024 are family households, with an average size of 3.16 persons. As of April 1, 2000, there were 2,491 total housing units.Population Density, 2000: 220.8 persons per square mile of land area. Hollis contains 31.8 square miles of land area and 0.5 square miles of inland water area. Origin: Incorporated in 1746 by Governor Benning Wentworth, the town takes its name from a very old English family. Governor Wentworth's ancestor, Thomas Wentworth, first Earl of Strafford, was married to Arabella Holles, daughter of John Holles, Earl of Clare. Hollis was first called West Dunstable, or Nittisset, which at one time was part of Groton, Massachusetts, and is now Nashua.
